The Camino de Santiago, otherwise known as "The Way of St. James," is a spiritual path across Spain that pilgrims have traversed for a thousand years. Two of those pilgrims were none other than movie stars Martin Sheen and his son Emilio Estevez who then went on to write, direct, and produce a film about the Camino and one father’s quest to reconnect with his son by walking along this historical route.
The Camino de Santiago has an extraordinary ability to bring strangers together and create a deep bond between them. It was a case of the Camino’s serendipity that led to the fortuitous encounter between the Walkabout Foundation and the film’s principal actors, Martin and Emilio. On a flight from London to Madrid, Rolando Gonzalez-Bunster met Emilio who explained he was traveling to Spain to screen his new film, "The Way," that tells the story of four strangers who walk the Camino to search for meaning in their lives. The hardships of the journey show the quartet the difference between “the life we live and the life we choose.”
Stunned by the synergy, Rolando explained to Emilio that the Camino also holds a special place in his heart. After all, it was along the Camino de Santiago that Luis and Carolina decided to launch the Walkabout Foundation. Over 31 days, the siblings walked and cycled the Camino’s 900 kilometers and Luis become the first person in the history of Spain to cross the entire country using only the strength of his two arms.
Emilio and Martin were so moved by the parallels between the film’s script and the Walkabout Foundation’s story that they offered the film's New York premiere as an event to benefit the Walkabout Foundation.
