Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has one of the fastest-growing economies in the Americas. Yet, still over 30% of its population lives under the poverty line and people with disabilities are significantly less likely than those without disabilities to complete primary education or be employed.

We are working to establish Walkabout Foundation República Dominicana – a sustainable regional hub that will bring together wheelchair assembly, fitting, repairs, rehabilitation and community outreach.

Located in Dajabón, on the border with Haiti, the Centre will allow us to provide wheelchairs and rehabilitation services across the Caribbean and Latin America, while continuing to serve neighbouring Haiti.

This number is based on UCP Wheels for Humanity’s multiplier, which takes the birth rate in each country and estimates that one wheelchair impacts the beneficiaries life in full, 0.75% of his or her primary caregiver’s life and 0.25% of the surrounding family members’ (siblings) lives.
